French Embassy in India reports a sharp rise in Indian students choosing France for university studies. The Embassy’s Education Counselor, Gregor Trumel, said enrolments grew 17 % this year, a jump from the 25 % increase seen two years ago. He credited France’s “Choose France” outreach tour – held in Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata – for bringing the news to students across the country.
Trumel said the goal is to welcome 30 000 Indian students in France by 2030, a target that he believes is getting closer thanks to “hard work and great success” of the tour. French higher‑education institutions are stepping up, with 59 universities now part of the Initiative – up from 50 last year and 42 two years earlier.
“Right now there are about 10 000 Indian students in France,” Trumel noted, adding that most are pursuing management and business programmes. “About 85 % of Indian students go to business schools, and a significant number also study engineering, science, social sciences and humanities.”
While French remains the official language, Trumel highlighted that France offers 1 600 programmes taught in English, removing a language barrier for many students. The Embassy says Indian scholars can find lots of opportunities they might not know about, which is why the Choose France tour takes place in cities across India.
India remains a top priority for France, Trumel said, stressing that visa policies and educational rules are unchanged. “We have no changes in visa policy. We are eager to host 30 000 Indian students by 2030,” he added.
He praised Indian students’ academic performance and quick adaptation, mentioning how many pick up French quickly once in France. “You’ll receive excellent education, meet new people, learn French, and experience a new working culture,” Trumel said. “It’s invaluable.”
He also showcased France’s academic reputation, pointing out its leading business schools and world‑class programmes in engineering, health, aerospace and AI. “France has many Nobel laureates and top engineering schools like École Polytechnique and École Centrale,” he noted.
Beyond university studies, Trumel highlighted the global advantage of speaking French. “Four hundred million people worldwide speak French – in North America, Africa and Europe – and learning it opens many doors,” he said.
Students can benefit from scholarships as well. “We have about 500 scholarship opportunities at French institutes,” Trumel said. “And on your return to India, French firms will create over 500 000 jobs in sectors such as aerospace, engineering and health.”
He wrapped up by inviting students to visit the Choose France tour and explore universities firsthand. “It’s a new frontier, a new world for Indian students. You’re absolutely welcome.”
The Embassy’s message underscores France’s growing appeal as an affordable option for higher education, promising excellent programs, scholarships and future career prospects for Indian students. ()
