Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the arrival of Anthropic, a U.S. artificial‑intelligence company, in India, saying the partnership will help grow key sectors such as education, healthcare and agriculture.
On X, Modi praised India’s vibrant tech ecosystem and its “talented youth” for driving human‑centric AI development.
Anthropic has opened its first Indian office in Bengaluru, making the city its second hub in the Indo‑Pacific after Tokyo. The move follows a recent meeting between Anthropic’s CEO, Dario Amodei, and Modi, where the company discussed plans to expand in India and its role in the future of AI. Amodei noted that uses of Anthropic’s AI assistant, Claude, have jumped five‑fold in India since June.
Bengaluru, ranked fifth worldwide for AI and deep‑tech ecosystems, already hosts more than 100,000 AI professionals. The new office is expected to boost local talent, research and development, and product innovation. Karnataka’s minister for Electronics, IT/BT, Priyank Kharge also confirmed the decision, emphasizing the city’s status as a global technology center that attracts global leaders.
Anthropic focuses on building reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. Its presence in India aligns with the government’s push to make AI a key driver of growth across industries.
The expansion marks India’s growing importance as a hub for AI innovation and highlights the country’s commitment to responsible, human‑centric artificial intelligence.
