The Afghan Taliban’s foreign minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, is arriving in New Delhi on October 9 for a historic visit. This marks the first senior delegation from Kabul to India since the Taliban seized power in August 2021.
Former Union Minister of State for External Affairs, M.J. Akbar, said the trip signals a shift in global attention toward Prime Minister Narendra Modi and India. “It shows that the world is reaching out to us,” he told . “It also counters Pakistan’s narrative that India is isolated.”
Akbar praised the visit as a “significant development.” He stressed that Afghanistan’s outreach demonstrates recognition of India’s standing as a major power that can help stabilize the region.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed the continuation of dialogue with the Afghan interim government. On October 3, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted diplomatic exchanges and humanitarian aid after a recent earthquake in Afghanistan.
The United Nations Security Council has granted a temporary exemption for Muttaqi’s international travel. He will stay in India for one week starting on October 9. MEA will keep the press updated on the visit’s progress.
Earlier this year, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had a teleconference with Muttaqi in May, showing ongoing communication between the two governments despite the Taliban’s recent rise to power.
