Sydney police are investigating two separate shooting‑and‑fire incidents that broke out in the city’s western suburbs early Thursday. The incidents highlight a worrying spike in violent activity across New South Wales (NSW).
Cabramatta: Fire and gunshots
Around 12:45 a.m., emergency crews were summoned to Cabramatta, a suburb 26 km west of Sydney’s centre. They found a house and a car both on fire. “We put the blaze out, but both vehicles suffered major damage,” said a NSW Police spokesperson.
Police quickly discovered an array of bullet casings at the scene. Investigators believe a burst of gunfire preceded the fires, raising concerns about a potential crime connected to the damage.
Green Valley: Loud bangs and a car fire
Shortly after 1 a.m., another alert hit North Liverpool Road in Green Valley. A careless driver set his car ablaze, but he managed to extinguish the flames. Police arrived around 7 a.m. and secured a crime scene, finding more bullet casings on the roadway.
Authorities think several shots were fired into the air and, so far, no one has been injured or reported property damage. The detective squad is working to link the two incidents.
Earlier incidents
The week has already seen a series of violent events in Sydney’s suburbs:
-
October 5 – Police reported a man with a gunshot wound and several others who sustained injuries. The victims were transported to hospital.
-
Sunday night – At 7:45 p.m., a shooting on Georges River Road in Croydon Park prompted a police lockdown. Officers arrested a suspect at 9:30 p.m. and seized firearms from the scene.
These events are part of a broader pattern of gun crime that NSW Police is monitoring closely.
Police response
Prime minister‑shaped police briefings focus on rapid response and public safety. NSW Police urge residents to report any suspicious activity to local precincts and to take precautionary steps to protect their homes and vehicles.
Sydney police remain on high alert. As the investigations unfold, residents in Cabramatta, Green Valley and other western suburbs are encouraged to stay vigilant and help authorities maintain safety in the community.
