Netanyahu threatens Hamas chiefs in Qatar, calls them “main obstacle” to ending Gaza war

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has fired a strong warning at Hamas leaders hiding out in Qatar. He accused them of sabotaging ceasefire talks and keeping the Gaza conflict alive just to protect their own skins.

In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Netanyahu slammed the Hamas politburo in Doha for dragging out the war and blocking hostage releases. “The Hamas terrorist chiefs living in Qatar don’t care about the people in Gaza. They blocked all ceasefire attempts to endlessly drag out the war. Getting rid of them would rid the main obstacle to releasing all our hostages and ending the war,” he wrote.

This comes as Israel ramps up criticism of Qatar for sheltering top Hamas figures like political bureau head Ismail Haniyeh. Israeli officials say these leaders are calling the shots from safe spots abroad while Gaza suffers, according to reports from The Times of Israel.

Just this week, Netanyahu drew a bold comparison to the US response after the 9/11 attacks. In a video message, he vowed Israel would hunt down Hamas leaders anywhere unless Qatar kicks them out or hands them over for justice. “Bring them to justice, because if you don’t, we will,” he declared.

Qatar didn’t take this lightly. The country’s foreign ministry hit back, calling Netanyahu’s words “reckless.” They stressed that hosting the Hamas office is all part of official mediation efforts backed by the US and Israel. “Netanyahu is fully aware that this took place within the framework of Qatar’s mediation, requested by the United States and Israel,” the statement read. It added that talks have always been open, with international support and even US and Israeli teams present. Qatar accused Netanyahu of twisting facts to justify actions the world has condemned.

Tensions boiled over after a reported Israeli airstrike in Gaza on Tuesday, which targeted a meeting of Hamas seniors. They were supposedly hashing out a fresh US-backed plan for a Gaza ceasefire and hostage deal, per The Times of Israel.

As the Israel-Hamas war stretches on, these exchanges highlight the tricky role of Qatar in Middle East peace talks and the growing pressure on Hamas leaders abroad.
