The National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA) in Bangladesh has warned media outlets not to air comments from former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) handed her a death sentence.
The NCSA said it is “deeply concerned” that some broadcasters were still sharing Hasina’s remarks, calling the former leader a “convicted fugitive.” The agency added that her statements could “incite violence, disorder and criminal activity.”
Still, the NCSA emphasized that it respects freedom of the press and freedom of expression. It urged journalists to avoid publishing statements from convicted individuals and to keep their reporting within legal boundaries.
The warning comes as the interim government’s chief advisor, Muhammad Yunus, faces criticism for allegedly suppressing the Awami League, of which Hasina is the head. Many see the NCSA’s move as part of an effort to curb the opposition’s voice.
Globally, hundreds of journalists have expressed alarm over the ICT’s verdict. In a joint statement, 102 reporters from around the world warned that the tribunal’s process appears biased and lack transparency, posing a serious threat to Bangladesh’s rule of law.
They highlighted problems such as:
* Questionable independence of the judiciary
* Inconsistencies and lack of clear evidence
* Possible political influence in the trials
The journalist group called for the immediate annulment of Hasina’s sentence and a fresh, impartial review of all appeals. They stressed that justice must be fair for both political leaders and ordinary citizens, and that the judicial process requires transparency and neutrality, especially in a democracy.
As Bangladesh moves forward, the clash between government authorities, media freedom, and international scrutiny remains a key issue for both national politics and global human‑rights observers.
