Bangladesh: Awami League ministers, six others arrested in separate cases

Bangladeshi Court Orders Arrest of Former Law Minister Anisul Huq and Seven Others in July Protests Murder Cases

In a big update from Dhaka, a Bangladeshi court has ordered former Law Minister Anisul Huq and seven other prominent figures to be shown as arrested in three murder cases tied to last year’s massive July demonstrations. These cases were filed at Jatrabari and Bhatara police stations, highlighting the ongoing fallout from those chaotic student-led protests.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam made the call during a court hearing on Wednesday. The accused appeared before the court through separate petitions, and after reviewing the details, the judge sent all eight straight to jail. This move is part of a wider crackdown on leaders linked to the ousted Awami League government.

So, who are these key players? The list includes heavyweights like former Industries Minister and Awami League advisory council member Amir Hossain Amu, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) President Hasanul Haq Inu, Workers Party President and Awami League ally Rashed Khan Menon, and former Agriculture Minister Abdur Razzaque. Rounding out the group are ex-independent MP Syed Sayedul Haque Sumon, former Awami League MP Kazi Monirul Islam Monu, and Nassa Group Chairman Nazrul Islam Majumder.

Breaking down the charges: Anisul Huq, Amu, Razzaque, Inu, Menon, and Sumon face murder accusations in the death of Riaz, a case registered at Jatrabari Police Station. Separately, MP Monu got arrested over the killing of Jubaid Islam at the same station. Meanwhile, Nazrul Islam Majumder is now in custody for the attempted murder of Naim Hossain Niloy, based on a complaint at Bhatara Police Station, as reported by Bangladesh’s top daily, The Business Standard.

This all fits into the bigger picture under the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government, which has ramped up actions against Awami League leaders and their associates since Sheikh Hasina’s sudden exit in August 2024. The Awami League has slammed these arrests as a tool to crush opposition and silence critics. Experts see it as political revenge, with many cases against Hasina and her party popping up right after her ouster—often on what they call shaky grounds.

Hasina’s dramatic fall shook Bangladesh’s democracy, drawing global concern. The interim setup has also faced heat for cozying up to radical Islamic groups, adding fuel to the tense political fire. As Bangladesh navigates this turbulent phase, these arrests could signal more shake-ups ahead in the country’s leadership landscape.
