Bangladesh’s Election Commission kicked off a series of important talks with key stakeholders on Sunday, as the country gears up for its general election in February 2026. These discussions aim to build trust and address concerns ahead of the vote.
The first meeting focused on civil society members and got underway around 10:40 a.m. local time at Nirbachan Bhaban in Dhaka’s Agargaon neighborhood. Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin led the session, joined by fellow commissioners Abdur Rahmanel Masud, Tahmida Ahmad, Md Anwarul Islam Sarker, and Brig Gen (retd) Abdul Fazal Md Sanaullah. EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed also attended.
Later Sunday, the commission planned chats with top educationists and professors at the same venue. Viewers can catch the stakeholder talks live on the Election Commission’s YouTube channel and official Facebook page, making it easy for people across Bangladesh to follow along.
Back in August, when the commission unveiled its electoral roadmap, officials promised these dialogues would start in late September and wrap up within about six weeks. The group includes political parties, media professionals, civil society leaders, election observers, experts, and activists from the July movement.
The day before, at the Election Officers’ Conference-2025 in Dhaka, Nasir Uddin opened up about the tough challenges the commission faces. “Working in Bangladesh is very difficult, especially in the current situation,” he said, as quoted by leading daily Prothom Alo. He explained that preparing for the 2026 general election means tackling direct and indirect obstacles while meeting various demands.
Nasir Uddin stressed fairness, assuring everyone that the EC won’t give illegal orders or tilt the scales toward any party. “We’ll stick to the rules and laws, doing the right work the right way,” he added.
Bangladesh remains caught in political uncertainty as the next election approaches. Parties that teamed up with interim chief adviser Muhammad Yunus to oust the Awami League government under former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina now clash over reform ideas, adding tension to the electoral process.
