Bangladesh’s Dhaka hit by two separate blasts in late December
Dhaka, Dec 27 (IANS) – An explosion at a madrasa in the South Keraniganj area near Dhaka wounded at least four people, two of them children, local media reported. The blast struck the Ummal Qura International Madrasa in the Hasnabad neighbourhood on Friday afternoon.
Police recovered explosives and bomb‑making materials from the premises, according to bdnews24. Senior officer Mizanur said the incident is still under investigation, adding, “We are still investigating how the blast occurred.”
The madrasa normally hosts about 50 students, but no classes were in session Friday because of a weekly holiday. Witnesses say the blast collapsed the walls of two classrooms, created cracks in the roof and supporting columns, and caused damage to a nearby building. A local journalist noted that the building owner’s name is Mufti Harun, who had rented the property for three years before handing its management to his brother‑in‑law, Al Amin. Police retrieved chemicals, crude explosives and bomb‑making equipment from the site.
Parveen Begum, the property’s owner, stated that she was unaware of any illicit activity under the madrasa’s name and recalled, “When I went there on Friday, I saw that the area around the building had been blown apart.”
*Earlier this week, on Wednesday, a man was killed when a crude explosive was hurled from a flyover in the Mogbazar area of Dhaka. Police said the device detonated beneath the flyover, just in front of the Moghbazar Freedom Fighters’ Memorial, a spot that sees heavy pedestrian traffic. The victim, later identified as Siam by his relatives, suffered critical injuries and died shortly after the blast.
“We gather that someone threw the cocktail bomb from the flyover, which fell on the victim’s head and burst. It blew up his head. We are investigating who did this,” a police official said, adding that authorities are working to identify the perpetrators.
The two incidents come amid a broader surge in violence and a deteriorating law and order situation in Bangladesh, which is currently governed by the Muhammad Yunus‑led interim administration.
