Dhaka – In Bangladesh, the dengue‑related death toll has risen to 249 this year, with four more patients lost in the first 24 hours of Monday, local news outlets say. The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) reports that 942 new patients were admitted for viral fever over the same span, bringing the total number of confirmed dengue cases to 60,791. Hospitals across the country are now treating 2,480 patients simultaneously.
The latest fatalities were recorded in Mymensingh, Dhaka South City Corporation and Rajshahi. Bangladesh’s dengue struggle dates back to 2024, when 575 lives were lost and 101,214 new cases were logged, while 100,040 people recovered.
### Health authorities strengthen hospital response
On September 16, DGHS officials issued new guidelines for public hospitals to better handle dengue patients. The directive mandates that every hospital sets up a dedicated dengue ward and a specialised medical team. Doctors and nurses receive clear responsibilities, while a board of specialists—including medicine, pediatrics and other fields—will oversee treatment for both dengue and chikungunya cases.
Key points of the guidelines:
– Hospitals must provide NS‑1 testing, emergency care and enough medication for all dengue patients.
– Dedicated dengue wards or rooms are required, with ICU support prioritized if needed.
– Outpatient departments must be managed by the same board and doctors.
– Hospital directors are to send letters to local councils urging mosquito‑eradication and clean‑up drives around hospital grounds.
– Weekly dengue‑coordination meetings, chaired by the hospital director or superintendent, should occur every Saturday.
These measures aim to cut down the number of severe cases and prevent more deaths. With the country battling this mosquito‑borne disease, clarity on hospital responsibilities and community clean‑up is key to protecting public health.
