On Saturday, a wave of violent clashes broke out in Saltha upazila of Faridpur district, leaving more than 100 people injured. Local reports say the fighting is rooted in a long‑standing feud between followers of BNP leaders Zahid Matubbor and Nuru Matubbor in Gatti union. During the latest flare‑up, supporters on both sides brandished makeshift weapons—including shields, spears and bamboo sticks—before the violence escalated.
Saltha Police Station’s officer‑in‑charge (Investigation), K M Maruf Hasan Russell, confirmed that the situation was brought under control around 11:45 a.m. and that additional police have been deployed to keep the peace. The skirmish erupted at three locations in the Balia Bazar area, involving an estimated thousands of residents from at least 20 villages. Property damage included vandalism to more than 20 homes and the looting of a cattle farm. Witnesses described the area as a “warzone,” prompting many women and children to flee in panic.
Hospital sources report that over 100 people were treated, with 50 seriously wounded admitted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital.
Earlier this month, a BNP member was killed and 18 others were injured during clashes over nominations across several districts. In Mymensingh district, supporters of BNP candidate M. Iqbal Hossain clashed with those denied nomination, while in Laksham, Cumilla, two BNP factions fought, injuring ten people.
The BNP currently faces a surge in factional violence, resulting in multiple casualties. Analysts point to accusations that Khaleda Zia’s party worked hand‑in‑glove with the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus to oust the democratically elected Awami League government last year, contributing to the ongoing turmoil.
