Congress MLA Sofia Firdous has raised alarms over vote theft in India, calling it a nationwide problem that’s got people worried about electoral malpractices. Speaking to in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, on Sunday, she stressed that “vote chori” isn’t limited to states like Odisha or Bihar—it’s a big concern across the country. “Every citizen feels some kind of malpractice is happening,” Firdous said, adding that these issues will come to light even more as time goes on.
Opposition leaders have ramped up their criticism of the BJP and the Election Commission of India (ECI) in recent months. Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, has been vocal with his “Vote chor, Gaddi chhor” slogan, pushing for fair elections. He recently led a Voter Adhikar Yatra in Bihar, joining forces with key INDIA bloc figures like Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav. The rally covered 25 districts, including Aurangabad, Gaya, and Siwan, touching over 110 assembly constituencies in the election-bound state. It spanned more than 1,300 kilometers and drew huge crowds.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge didn’t hold back either, slamming the ECI and asking if it’s turned into a “BJP back-office” for vote theft. The whole controversy exploded in August when Rahul Gandhi held a press conference on the 7th, sharing Congress research on voting irregularities in Karnataka’s Mahadevapura Assembly segment, part of the Bangalore Central Lok Sabha seat. He claimed vote chori involving 1,00,250 votes, pointing to duplicate voters, fake addresses, and bulk registrations at single spots.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar hit back on August 17, saying the ECI and voters aren’t scared of “false allegations.” He assured that the poll body remains impartial, standing firm with every section of society without bias. As debates on electoral malpractices heat up, many eyes are on how the Election Commission of India handles these vote theft claims ahead of key polls.
