Bangladesh’s Awami League fired sharp criticism at the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government on Monday, accusing it of unleashing severe physical and mental abuse on party leaders and activists—especially women—while filing fake cases to harass them.
The party expressed grave worries, claiming that “the illegal usurper, killer-fascist Yunus and his clique” stop at nothing to oppress Awami League members. In a strongly worded statement, they pointed out bogus charges against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and leaders at every level. Many face unfair jail time, with reports of deaths from torture inside prisons and ongoing brutal treatment.
The Awami League highlighted a disturbing new tactic: extreme, barbaric torture against women leaders and activists. “When they try to speak to the jail superintendent about any issue, they face physical humiliation,” the statement said. “If they protest, guards and other inmates inflict more disgraceful abuse.”
To ramp up the harassment, authorities arrest party members on “false and fabricated cases” in various parts of Bangladesh, then shuffle them between prisons, the party alleged.
The group slammed these “extreme and despicable” acts as conscience-shocking, vowing that public outrage will hit back hard against the “tyrannical, killer-fascist Yunus clique.”
This isn’t the first time. Recently, the Awami League blasted the interim government for “brutal torture and killing” of its members in prisons nationwide. They said prison officials, following orders from the “illegal and unconstitutional” regime, have caused many deaths.
Back in July, the party demanded full, transparent investigations into at least 24 custodial deaths since Yunus took power. They called on the international community, human rights groups, and justice advocates to support victims’ families and push for independent probes into prison abuses and deaths in Bangladesh.
