India recently hosted the BIMSTEC Young Leaders’ Summit in Guwahati, Assam, from September 9 to 11, bringing together over 80 young leaders from all BIMSTEC member countries. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) shared on Monday that the event focused on how youth can drive holistic development in the region, covering politics, business, culture, and civil society.
The summit kicked off with an inauguration by Assam Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya, in partnership with Bharat Scouts and Guides. It aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 21-point action plan for BIMSTEC, which aims to boost cooperation across sectors like security, trade, and growth.
Sessions on entrepreneurship, design thinking, and cross-cultural collaboration got everyone excited about creating sustainable solutions that respond to social needs. Cultural exchanges and country-sharing talks helped build deeper understanding and stronger bonds among participants.
The MEA called the outcomes “encouraging,” pointing to sharper communication skills, fresh ideas for social businesses, and new networks of trust that will spark future teamwork. The event also spotlighted Northeast India as a key “land bridge” connecting the Bay of Bengal region for socio-economic progress.
This initiative fits perfectly with India’s Neighbourhood First, Act East, and MAHASAGAR policies, which promote mutual growth and security. It equips young leaders to tackle today’s challenges and shape tomorrow’s policies for prosperity in BIMSTEC countries.
Back in April, at the sixth BIMSTEC Summit in Thailand, PM Modi unveiled this ambitious 21-point plan to revitalize the group. He shared his thoughts on X (formerly Twitter): “BIMSTEC is an important forum to further global good. It is imperative we strengthen it and deepen our engagement. In this context, I proposed a 21-point action plan covering different aspects of our cooperation.”
Overall, the summit shows how youth involvement can power BIMSTEC’s future, blending India’s leadership with regional unity.
