A Brazilian fashion influencer has died after a summer‑time “fox eye” lift left him with a severe infection, a tragedy that has shocked his 120,000‑plus followers on Instagram.
Adair Mendes Dutra Junior – known online as Junior Dutra – underwent the eye‑lift in March. The procedure, performed by celebrity surgeon Fernando Garbi, lifts the lower corners of the eyes to create a “cat‑like” look. he posted photos of a bruised and swollen face later that month and said he was dealing with an infection as soon as the week after the surgery.
In early October, the 31‑year‑old complained of shortness of breath and was rushed to a public hospital in São Paulo, where he died on Oct. 3. A close friend, Gean Souza, told Brazilian magazine Quem that the medical records were still sealed and that no clear cause of death had been established.
Junior had previously filed a lawsuit against Dr. Garbi, accusing the surgeon of medical malpractice, fraud, and causing serious bodily injury. He also urged police to investigate the doctor. Garbi’s lawyer denied any link to his client’s death, saying the accusations were made by people looking for quick notoriety and threatening legal action against them.
The “fox eye” lift, also called canthoplasty or canthopexy, has surged in popularity because people love to share the results on social media. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the trend is driven by influencers who showcase their transformed eyes online.
Fortunately, Dr. Garbi is being held to account and the case is being watched closely. For Junior, the dream of traveling abroad and being closer to family slipped away. His friends are calling for justice, hoping that no other follower will face the same fate from a cosmetic procedure.
