Phnom Penh, Oct 18 – Cambodia has deported 64 South Korean suspects linked to online scams, including five women, and sent them home through Techo International Airport in southern Kandal province. The move follows the country’s ongoing crackdown on cyber‑fraud, which has already arrested more than 3,400 scammers from 20 different nationalities in just four months.
The Ad‑Hoc Committee to Combat Online Scams explained that the expellees will face legal action in South Korea. This is not Cambodia’s first round of expulsions. Earlier this year, the government sent 180 South Korean nationals back to their home country.
The ministry’s decision comes as part of a broader effort to protect public safety and maintain order. “We have identified serious online fraud activity,” the committee stated. “The individuals involved will be returned to face punishment in their own jurisdiction.”
Indonesia and other regional partners have also been tightening their grip on internet‑based crimes, but Cambodia remains the most aggressive in the region. Prime Minister Hun Manet recently met with South Korean Second Vice Foreign Minister Kim Ji‑na to discuss greater cooperation. The talks followed the tragic death of 22‑year‑old Park Min‑ho, a South Korean university student, who was found in Kampot province after being tortured by criminal gangs. A Korean woman was also killed near the Cambodia‑Vietnam border on Oct 7.
“In the past, partnership between our countries has yielded tangible results,” Hun Manet said on X (formerly Twitter). “We will continue to strengthen collaboration to prevent, suppress and combat online scams, thereby supporting peace and public order.”
Meanwhile, the government released tips for citizens to avoid falling victim to digital fraud: avoid sharing personal data, be skeptical of unsolicited offers, and use strong, unique passwords.
With the first wave of deportations now complete, Cambodia vows to keep cutting off the cyber‑crime networks that threaten its people and the foreign community that plays a large role in the country’s economy.
