Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said his government is ready to keep talking with the United States after President Donald Trump suddenly ended trade talks between the two nations.
Carney told reporters on Friday, as he left for the ASEAN Summit in Malaysia, that Canada has been working hard on key sectors like steel, aluminium and energy. “We can’t control U.S. trade policy,” he said, noting the big shift from the 1980s and earlier. “Our officials have made a lot of progress. When the Americans are ready, we’ll pick up that progress and build on it.”
The comments came hours after Trump announced via Truth Social that he was terminating all U.S.–Canada trade negotiations. Trump blamed a recent Ontario commercial ad that used archived footage of former President Ronald Reagan criticizing tariffs—footage he called “fake.” The ad slipped into a claim that Canada was trying to influence the U.S. Supreme Court, which is reviewing challenges to Trump’s tariff actions.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford quickly put the ad on hold, saying it would pause so trade talks could resume. White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett agreed that Trump’s frustration with Canada has grown over time and that Canadian negotiators had been “very difficult to negotiate with.”
The dispute adds uncertainty to one of the world’s biggest bilateral trading relationships. Trump has already slapped a 35 % tariff on some Canadian exports and has repeatedly suggested that Canada become the U.S.’s 51st state.
As Canada’s leaders signal openness to dialogue, the U.S. remains locked in its tariff policy. The next steps will set the tone for future trade relations between the two North American giants.
