In a shocking and tragic incident in northern France, a car plowed into a crowd outside a bar in the town of Evreux, Normandy, leaving one person dead and several others seriously injured. The event has sent shockwaves through the local community.
According to authorities, the horrifying scene unfolded in the early hours of Saturday morning, around 4 a.m., when a vehicle reversed at high speed into a group of people on a street in the town center. The car crashed into the terrace of a pizzeria in the seaside area.
Initial reports from local media suggested the driver may have fallen ill, but the public prosecutor, Remi Coutin, provided a more alarming update. He stated that intentional action has now been “formally ruled out,” and the incident is believed to have started after an escalation of events outside a bar with a “bad reputation.”
Tragically, the toll was very heavy. Emergency firefighters treated six victims at the scene. This included four pedestrians and the two people inside the car. One person tragically lost their life, and three others sustained serious injuries.
Following the incident, three individuals—two men, including the driver, and one woman—were taken into police custody. The prosecutor confirmed that further arrests are possible as the investigation continues.
The Mayor of Evreux, Guy Lefrand, expressed his “deepest sympathy and solidarity with the victims, their families and loved ones.” He also commended the rapid response of the police and emergency services who rushed to the chaotic scene, which reportedly involved a panicked crowd, many of whom were under the influence of alcohol.
The town, home to roughly 50,000 people, was left reeling. Bus services were temporarily rerouted as a large security cordon was put in place, which was later lifted by late afternoon.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the Evreux incident to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigation.
