Beijing, Oct 24 – Chinese President Xi Jinping will travel to South Korea for the 32nd APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Gyeongju and will also make a state visit to the Republic of Korea (ROK) from Oct 30 to Nov 1, the Chinese foreign ministry said on Friday.
The Chinese foreign ministry said the visit was a special invitation from ROK President Lee Jae‑myung. “APEC is the most important forum for economic cooperation in the Asia‑Pacific, and President Xi’s attendance shows China’s strong commitment to the region,” spokesperson Guo Jiakun told reporters.
During the summit, Xi will give speeches and hold one‑on‑one talks with other heads of state. Taipei, Washington, and Seoul leaders are all expected to meet with him on the sidelines, with the U.S. President and Chinese President Zhao also slated to meet in the same week.
The state visit is a historic moment. It marks the first time the Chinese president will visit South Korea in 11 years, and it is the first time the leaders of the two countries have met since President Lee took office. “China values its relationship with the ROK,” Guo said. “We will keep our policy of stability and continuity and push forward the China‑ROK strategic partnership.”
The Chinese side stresses that the partnership is built on good‑neighbourhood and win‑win cooperation. “We want to strengthen the friendship and shared future of the Asia‑Pacific region,” Guo added.
For South Korea, Prime Minister Kim Min‑seok said the APEC summit could be a turning point. “Having the U.S. and China participate gives us a good chance for success,” he told journalists while inspecting the conference site in Gyeongju, a city on the southeastern coast.
Kim’s remarks come just before the summit, which runs from Oct 31 to Nov 1. He welcomed the presence of the U.S. and Chinese leaders, hoping that their dialogue will help smooth tensions in the region.
Overall, the APEC meeting and Xi’s visit are seen as key opportunities for South Korea and China to deepen economic ties and promote peace and growth across the Asia‑Pacific.
