A Chinese woman has been charged with a gold‑theft crime at the Paris Natural History Museum, sparking a fresh wave of security concerns around France’s famous museums.
The incident took place last month when police board the museum’s storage chapel during a routine inspection. Inside, detectives found a small, high‑value gold object that had been hidden in a display case. The police quickly linked the item to a missing museum exhibit and charged the suspect with theft and fraud.
The museum’s curator explained that the gold object, part of a long‑standing collection, was a small decorative piece used as a research aid for a baguette‑shaped terracotta model. Although the item was valuable, it was not on public display at the time of the theft. The curator said the museum had increased security in the weeks before the theft, but warns that thieves can still find ways to breach systems.
“This is a very serious offence,” said a police spokesperson. “We are investigating how the suspect entered and exited the premises. We are working closely with the museum staff and the police from the Paris Police Prefecture’s cultural crimes squad.”
The suspect is a 31‑year‑old citizen of China who has been held in a Paris jail on remand. Police say the suspect had a history of museum‑related fraud in China and was found in possession of another stolen piece. They suspect the theft is part of a larger international museum‑theft ring that targets high‑value artifacts in Europe.
France’s Ministry of Culture said it was reviewing its museum‑security protocols. “We have the same standards as the rest of the world. We will not let any gaps exist,” the ministry said. “The security should be organized by museums. We hope that theful “

The investigation continues and the authorities are still wanting additional information. As of the last update, the suspect was still under custody, while museum officials say the gold piece is safe and all other exhibits remain untouched. The case remains an early reminder that even the world’s most heavily insured collections are not complete in their security.
