Congress floor debate turns violent as Mexican lawmakers filmed pulling hair, shoving each other

Mexican lawmakers were caught on camera pushing one another and even pulling hair on the floor of the Congress building in Mexico City on Monday. The clip, which has quickly gone viral, shows a group of women from rival parties struggling to hold a podium at the front of the chamber.
What starts as shouting soon turns into a physical scuffle, with some of the legislators grabbing each other’s hair as their colleagues try to step in.
The drama unfolded while deputies debated changes to the city’s watchdog body that oversees transparency. Members of the National Action Party (PAN), a centre‑right group, were protesting the conduct of the ruling left‑leaning Morena Party.
PAN representatives tried to maintain their positions at the podium, while Morena figures attempted to wrest the platform from them, sparking the confrontation.
After the incident both sides condemned the violence but immediately blamed the other side for igniting it. “We took the podium peacefully, without touching anyone, and the decision made by the majority legislative group and its allies was to try and regain control of the board through violence,” PAN aide Andres Atayde told reporters in a press briefing, according to a translation by the Economic Times.
Lawmaker Daniela Alvarez from PAN added, “Not only is it vulgar, not only is it aggressive, but it is lamentable that this is the majority governing party for this city.” Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Morena, Paulo Garcia, echoed the sentiment, stating that the opposition’s systematic resort to violence, rather than debate, is a cause for concern.
“What worries us a lot is how the opposition is systematically resorting to violence instead of arguments, in the absence of being able to debate,” Garcia said later in an interview with Mexican media.
