Islamabad, Oct 16 – Human rights groups say that Pakistan’s treatment of minorities is getting worse, while a recent election scandal shows how the military’s power has eroded the country’s democratic rules.
At the 60th session of the United Nations Human Rights Commission, victims of state‑backed persecution in Pakistan spoke aloud. They detailed attacks on Christians, Hindus and Ahmadis, and reported that the police and judges often ignore these crimes.
UN experts warned that “violence against religious minorities is rising and being carried out with impunity.” The report highlighted a sharp increase in attacks on Ahmadis: killings, arrests and desecration of churches and graves. “Perpetrators must no longer go unpunished,” the United Nations said.
Blasphemy accusations are used to spark mob attacks on Christian communities. Cases rarely end with convictions, and the courts sometimes support “religious marriages” that mask forced conversions of young Muslim girls.
Ethnic minorities suffer similar abuses. The nation’s 40‑million‑strong Pashtun community faces ongoing military operations that have been reported to include extrajudicial killings, disappearances and torture. In Balochistan, the Baloch people experience repeated disappearances and deaths of activists, with families of the missing receiving harassment instead of support.
The human‑rights crisis is fed by a general assault on democracy. The 2024 “rigged” elections revealed how the military’s unchecked power is eroding democratic institutions. Analysts say that Pakistan’s democratic façade is crumbling, leaving minorities among the first to feel the effects of the hybrid “democratic‑cumulative‑military” regime.
These reports call for urgent reforms, stronger rule of law, and a commitment to protect Pakistan’s diverse religious and ethnic communities.
