Defence Ministers’ dialogue reflects growth in partnership: Australia on Rajnath Singh’s visit

Canberra, October 10 – The defence ties between Australia and India have taken a big step forward after Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visited the Australian capital. A new chapter in the partnership aims to keep the Indo‑Pacific region stable and secure.
On X, Defence Australia posted that the first Australia‑India Defence Ministers’ Dialogue happened at Parliament House. The message said the visit lifted the defence relationship and marked a new level of cooperation. It also previewed fresh bilateral agreements that will set up Joint Staff Talks between the two militaries.
The handful of meetings were an agenda of higher‑level talks. Singh discussed cyber security, defence industry, maritime patrols and regional threats with Defence Minister Richard Marles. The two leaders called the talks “productive” and agreed to widen cooperation in many areas.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who also met Singh, posted on social media that the defence partnership keeps strengthening. “Built on trust, shared interests and a commitment to a peaceful, secure and prosperous Indo‑Pacific,” he wrote. The post celebrated Singh’s first trip to Australia and the inaugural Defence Ministers’ Dialogue.
In addition, Singh met Foreign Minister Penny Wong. They explored ways to deepen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and talked about being “joint custodians of the Indian Ocean.” Wong stressed the shared responsibility of keeping the area free from conflict.
Together, the leaders reviewed potential joint projects across trade, technology, connectivity and security. The move is seen as a boost to a broad, multi‑sector engagement between Australia and India, which share a common interest in maintaining peace and stability in the Indo‑Pacific.
