Bangladesh’s dengue outbreak is deepening fast, with more people falling ill and dying every day. Authorities report that the death toll has climbed to 313 now, while the total number of cases confirmed in 2025 tops 78,500.
Across the country, 1,195 new patients were admitted in the last 24 hours, and hospitals in Dhaka are treating 1,150 people. Other regions are handling a further 3,337 cases. In the city, two deaths occurred in both Dhaka South and Dhaka North, and another two were recorded in Barishal.
The latest data shows 62 % of the infected patients are men and 38 % are women. Among those who have died, 53 % are male and 47 % female. DGHS Director General Abu Jafor told a press briefing that this year’s infection count is higher than last year’s, but the proportion of deaths to cases is lower. He stressed that cutting mosquito breeding sites and using nets are key individual actions that can keep dengue under control.
“More than half of the fatal cases happen on the very first day of hospital admission,” Jafor said, underscoring the importance of early detection. “If people seek care sooner and at home when the illness is mild, we can treat them before the virus hits its worst phase.”
Early diagnosis, according to the director general, can save lives. He warned that ignorance, delay, and neglect are the biggest reasons people miss the window for effective treatment. The world’s leading health authority, the WHO, says dengue remains a major threat in tropical and subtropical areas, especially in crowded cities where Aedes mosquitoes thrive.
There is no specific antiviral cure for dengue, but treating the infection early and staying well hydrated can dramatically lower the risk of severe disease and death. The DGHS urges citizens to pick up routine mosquito‑protection measures, clear standing water, and seek medical help as soon as symptoms appear.
Bangladesh grapples with a worsening dengue crisis. The government’s new focus on early detection, mosquito control, and public information could be the difference between rising fatalities and a contained outbreak.
