The United States is stepping up to help Denmark tackle potential drone threats by providing anti-drone capabilities. This support comes just in time for two big events in Copenhagen: an informal meeting of EU heads of state and government on Wednesday, and the European Political Community (EPC) summit on Thursday.
Denmark’s Ministry of Defence made the announcement on Tuesday. It’s all part of ramping up security amid recent worries about suspicious drone activity across the country.
Other European allies are pitching in too. Germany’s frigate FGS Hamburg has already docked in Copenhagen to boost airspace surveillance. France plans to send a Fennec military helicopter and some personnel, while Sweden will supply radar systems and its own counter-drone tech.
Even Ukraine is offering its know-how to strengthen Denmark’s defenses against drones, according to reports from Danish broadcaster DR and Xinhua news agency.
Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen explained that these contributions came together in the last few days. “This support lets us better position our resources where they’re needed most, working hand-in-hand with the police,” he said. The goal? Keep everyone safe during the high-profile gatherings.
The extra precautions follow a string of drone disruptions that have hit Denmark hard lately. On September 22, Copenhagen’s Kastrup Airport had to close its airspace for about four hours after spotting drones. Aalborg Airport faced a similar shutdown for several hours on September 24. Police also got reports of drone sightings near Esbjerg, Sonderborg, and Skrydstrup Air Base.
To play it safe, Denmark has banned all civilian drone flights nationwide from September 29 through October 3. This nationwide drone ban aims to prevent any risks during the EU summit and EPC events.
It’s worth noting that Denmark currently holds the rotating presidency of the EU Council, a role it will continue through July to December 2025. With so many world leaders in town, the focus on counter-drone measures and international security cooperation couldn’t be more timely.
