Khartoum, Dec 14 – LatestNewsX reports that a drone strike on a United Nations compound in Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan, killed six UN peacekeepers and wounded seven others.
Xinhua says the Sudanese Armed Forces blamed the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for the attack, a claim the RSF has denied.
In a statement from the SAF, officials said the drone launched three missiles at the UN headquarters and the Bangladesh Battalion, igniting a UN supply depot. All casualties were members of that battalion, which functions under the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei, a disputed zone between Sudan and South Sudan.
The Transitional Sovereign Council, which supports the SAF, condemned the alleged RSF drone strike on UN property in Kadugli, labeling it a serious breach of international humanitarian law and the safeguards that protect UN sites.
“Targeting a protected UN facility represents a dangerous escalation and criminal behavior amounting to an organized terrorist act,” the council warned, noting that the strike threatens humanitarian and international missions.
The council held the RSF “fully responsible” and urged the United Nations and the global community to take decisive steps to shield UN facilities and humanitarian workers, ensuring those accountable are held to account under international law.
The RSF, however, has refuted any involvement in an aerial assault on the UN premises. In a statement, the RSF dismissed the allegations as “baseless,” claiming they were an attempt to fabricate accusations against its forces.
The RSF asserted that its record is “entirely free” of attacks on international organizations, adding that it has previously worked to protect UN sites and keep humanitarian staff safe. It called on international bodies to verify information carefully.
Sudan has been mired in a deadly conflict since April 15, 2023, when hostilities erupted between the SAF and the RSF, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and displacing millions within the country and beyond its borders.
