The Indian External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, joined a special maritime‑security meeting with G7 foreign ministers in Niagara, Canada, on Wednesday. The session attracted leaders from the United States, Canada, France, Brazil, and other G7 partners.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio posted a photo of the gathering on X (formerly Twitter). He highlighted that “safe and open waterways from the Gulf of America to the Pacific are the backbone of the American economy,” urging stronger coordination to boost maritime security.
Earlier that day, Jaishankar met privately with Rubio. The U.S. minister expressed condolences over the Delhi blast that killed several people. Jaishankar tweeted, “Good to meet @SecRubio this morning at #G7 FMM. Appreciate his condolences on the loss of lives in the blast in Delhi. Discussed our bilateral ties, focusing on trade and supply chains. Exchanged views on the Ukraine conflict, the Middle East/West Asia situation and Indo‑Pacific.”
On Tuesday, Jaishankar also met with ministers from Canada, Mexico, France, Brazil, South Africa, the UK, and Germany. These meetings reinforce India’s growing role in global trade and security.
India is an “invited partner” at the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting under Canada’s presidency, alongside Brazil, Australia, and South Korea. The two‑day event addressed global security, economic resilience, energy cooperation, and strengthening ties in the Indo‑Pacific region.
The meeting comes as the United States and India talk about a potential trade deal. President Donald Trump recently said the U.S. is close to finalizing a new, fair trade agreement with India, promising benefits for both sides.
