EAM Jaishankar congratulates Faure on becoming Seychelles Minister of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora
New Delhi – External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar welcomed the latest appointment in Seychelles, posting on the social media platform X that he looks forward to working with the new Minister of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Barry Faure. Jaishankar’s message was a clear signal that India remains committed to deepening its partnership with the small Indian‑Ocean nation.
Earlier in October, Seychelles celebrated a new era as Patrick Herminie took the oath of office as the sixth president at a ceremony held at Unity Stadium. India’s Vice President, C.P. Radhakrishnan, was there in the role of the nation’s representative. The two leaders met inside the State House in Victoria and discussed ways to boost bilateral cooperation. Radhakrishnan also extended India’s warm congratulations to the new president, highlighting shared goals for peace and prosperity across the Indian Ocean and the Global South.
In a separate meeting at the same venue, Radhakrishnan talked with Seychelles’ Vice President, Sebastien Pillay. The conversation focused on diversifying the already‑solid India‑Seychelles relationship, which is built on shared heritage, culture and strong people‑to‑people links. Both sides reaffirmed their dedication to expanding trade, investment and people‑to‑people exchanges.
The two countries have enjoyed diplomatic ties since Seychelles gained independence on 29 June 1976. The inaugural Indian naval ship, INS Nilgiri, was part of the independence celebrations. India opened its mission in Victoria in 1979, with the High Commissioner located in Dar es Salaam and concurrently accredited to Seychelles. The first resident High Commissioner arrived in 1987, and Seychelles opened its mission in New Delhi in 2008.
With the new minister in place and a fresh presidential team, the next chapter of India‑Seychelles cooperation looks promising. Officials from both sides vowing to build on a long history of friendship and mutual respect, the relationship is set to grow stronger in the coming years.
