India’s top diplomat, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, welcomed Malawi’s new foreign‑minister, George Chaponda, via a post on X. Jaishankar said he looks forward to deepening bilateral cooperation, after President Peter Mutharika named Chaponda on October 4 – the first day Mutharika began his second term in office.
Chaponda is no stranger to the portfolio. He served as Malawi’s foreign‑minister from 2014 to 2020 during Mutharika’s first presidency. The appointment follows a brief period after Mutharika’s recent election win on September 16, after which he assumed office a week later.
Earlier this year, Jaishankar had congratulated Malawi on its National Day, noting that India‑Malawi ties have been growing steadily. The two sides have been expanding cooperation through regular high‑level exchanges. In 2024, Indian President Droupadi Murmu visited Malawi, meeting President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera. The trip produced several agreements, including memorandums of understanding on arts and culture, youth ventures, sports, and pharmaceutical collaboration.
President Murmu also paid tribute to Malawi’s war heroes, visiting the National War Memorial in Lilongwe and laying a wreath at the Kamuzu Mausoleum, the final resting place of former President Hastings Kamuzu Banda.
These recent developments underscore a strengthening friendship between India and Malawi, with increasing diplomatic, cultural, and economic links that continue to expand.
