On Friday, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar sent warm greetings to Zambia’s Foreign Minister Mulambo Haimbe, the Zambian government and its people on their 61st Independence Day. The Indian minister posted the message on X, saying India is ready to deepen the long‑standing partnership with Zambia.
Zambia celebrated a decade and a half since it freed itself from British rule in October 1964. Referred to as “61 Years of Peace and Unity – Building a Resilient and Prosperous Zambia,” the national holiday highlighted the country’s progress and the value of strong, friendly ties with the world.
India and Zambia have enjoyed close relations for over six decades. India was one of the first countries to recognize Zambia after its independence, and the two sides have grown a relationship built on respect, mutual benefit, and a shared commitment to growth.
In November 2024, the 6th session of the Joint Permanent Commission (JPC) between India and Zambia met in Lusaka. The ministers reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral cooperation, covering agriculture, education, science and technology, energy, culture, urban development, finance, trade, training scholarships, defense, minerals, transport, water, disaster management, and health.
The Ministry of External Affairs notes that Zambia is among a handful of African nations that have reaped tangible gains from India’s development‑cooperation program. India has supplied EXIM Bank lines of credit, railway wagons, flood and drought relief funds, fully paid scholarships for higher‑education courses, ITEC training slots, and customized capacity‑building initiatives through the India‑Africa Forum Summit.
India’s support fuels projects on the ground that help Zambia grow, while both countries continue to nurture a partnership that honors tradition and looks ahead to shared prosperity.
