India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar sent warm greetings to China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi and the Chinese people on Wednesday, marking the 76th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China. He expressed hope for ongoing efforts to stabilize and rebuild India-China relations amid ongoing border tensions.
In a post on X, Jaishankar wrote: “Greetings to Politburo Member and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and the Chinese people on the occasion of the founding day of the People’s Republic of China. Look forward to continuing our work to stabilize and rebuild our ties.”
The occasion celebrates October 1, 1949, when Mao Zedong proclaimed the founding of the People’s Republic of China. This year’s event highlights the deep history between the world’s two most populous nations, as they navigate complex ties.
Just last month, Wang Yi made a two-day official visit to India in August. During the trip, he met with Jaishankar to discuss key issues. He also held a fresh round of Special Representatives talks on the India-China border question with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In their meeting, Jaishankar stressed the need for progress on de-escalation along the border. “This is very important because the basis for any positive momentum in our ties is the ability to jointly maintain peace and tranquility in the border areas. It is also essential that the de-escalation process move forward,” he said in opening remarks.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and other officials joined the discussions, which kicked off soon after Wang Yi arrived in New Delhi.
The talks went beyond borders, touching on global matters. Jaishankar noted that when India and China meet, the international landscape naturally comes up. “We seek a fair, balanced, and multi-polar world order, including a multi-polar Asia. Reformed multilateralism is also the call of the day,” he added.
He highlighted the urgency of boosting stability in the global economy and fighting terrorism in all its forms. “I look forward to our exchange of views,” Jaishankar concluded, signaling a commitment to constructive dialogue on India-China relations.
