Kuala Lumpur, Oct 27 – In a bustling event in Malaysia’s capital, India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar chatted with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on the sidelines of the 20th East Asia Summit.
Jaishankar posted on X, saying, “Nice to meet PM Anthony Albanese of Australia on the sidelines of 20th East Asia Summit.” The meeting drew shared thoughts on the Quad, a group that includes India, Australia, Japan and the United States.
Albanese told reporters in Kuala Lumpur that the Quad is “an important forum” and “an important vehicle” for the four nations. He added that he hopes the next leaders’ meeting will happen in the first quarter of 2026, possibly in India.
The Quad, formed to promote a free and open Indo‑Pacific, aims to advance peace, stability and prosperity across the region. The next leaders’ summit is set for India, and the 10th Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting took place in Washington on July 1, 2025.
Earlier, the quad hierarchy hosted its first virtual summit on March 12, 2021, with leaders including India’s Narendra Modi, and its first in‑person meeting on September 24, 2021, in Washington. Subsequent summits followed in March 2022 (virtual), May 2022 in Japan, May 2023 in Hiroshima, and September 2024 in Wilmington, Delaware.
The East Asia Summit in Kuala Lumpur and the Quad talks signal ongoing cooperation among India, Australia, Japan and the United States as they navigate the region’s challenges and opportunities.
