India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Kuala Lumpur on Monday, where they talked about strengthening bilateral ties and tackling regional and global challenges. The meeting comes as India and the United States continue trade negotiations and work toward a fair agreement.
On X, Jaishankar posted, “Glad to meet @SecRubio this morning in Kuala Lumpur. Appreciated the discussion on our bilateral ties as well as regional and global issues.” U.S. officials said talks are moving forward. Union Minister Piyush Goyal added last week that India’s commerce team recently flew to the U.S. to meet their counterparts, and that progress is underway.
Rubio also addressed concerns that U.S. ties with Pakistan might undercut its relationship with India. Speaking to reporters en route to Doha, Qatar, he assured that India’s partnership is “deep, historic, and important” and that U.S. relations with Pakistan don’t come at the cost of friendship with New Delhi. He emphasized the need for India to engage multiple partners in a mature diplomatic framework.
In other regional news, India and ASEAN nations deepened their cooperation during the 22nd ASEAN‑India Summit in Kuala Lumpur. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who joined the summit virtually for the twelfth time, highlighted key areas such as counter‑terrorism, early trade review, and maritime security. Modi underscored that terrorism threatens global peace and stressed the importance of unity in combating it.
The summit and the U.S. meeting illustrate India’s growing focus on both global trade and strategic partnerships in the Indo‑Pacific region.
