India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently had a key phone chat with Poland’s Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski. The call focused on the ongoing Ukraine conflict and rising security worries in the region.

Jaishankar shared India’s firm stand on the matter. He stressed that India wants an early end to the fighting and a lasting solution for peace in Ukraine. Posting on X (formerly Twitter), Jaishankar wrote: “Spoke to Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski of Poland today. He shared his concern about recent developments pertaining to Poland’s security. I underlined that India favors an early end to hostilities and a durable solution for the Ukraine conflict.”

This conversation came right after a tense incident in Poland. On the night of September 9, Polish authorities reported that Russian-made drones breached their airspace a whopping 19 times. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk didn’t hold back, calling it a “large-scale provocation.” Speaking before an emergency government meeting, Tusk said on national TV: “Most likely, we are witnesses to a large-scale provocation.”

Russia’s Defence Ministry responded quickly to the drone incident. They denied any plans to target Polish sites and pointed out that the drones’ range is only up to 700 km. Still, they offered to talk things over. “No facilities in Poland were planned to be targeted,” the ministry stated. “However, we are ready to hold consultations with the Polish Defense Ministry on this matter.”

India has been vocal about supporting peace in the Ukraine-Russia conflict. At a recent press briefing in New Delhi, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal echoed this. “We welcome all the recent efforts towards establishing peace in Ukraine. We hope that all parties will proceed constructively. India supports an early end to the conflict and the establishment of an enduring peace,” Jaiswal said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has led this push for a peaceful resolution. During last week’s Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in China’s Tianjin, Modi met Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines. He welcomed ongoing efforts to end the Ukraine war and urged all sides to act wisely. “We welcome all the recent efforts in the direction of resolving the conflict. We hope that all the involved parties will proceed further constructively. We will have to figure out ways to end the conflict as soon as possible to restore regional stability and peace. This is the call of the entire humanity,” Modi stated.

As tensions simmer along the borders, India’s call for dialogue and de-escalation in the Ukraine conflict highlights its role in pushing for global stability.
