Egypt’s foreign ministry said Monday that Egypt’s Badr Abdelatty and Qatar’s prime minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, used a phone call to affirm their joint pledge to keep pushing for a stronger, lasting cease‑fire in the Gaza Strip.
The ministers talked about the latest talks on President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan, as reported by Xinhua. They stressed that any lasting peace must link the West Bank and Gaza to keep Palestinian territories united. “Palestinians must lead their own affairs while keeping a single line of decision‑making,” Abdelatty emphasized.
Both officials also reviewed the UN Security Council’s ongoing consultations on a potential international force to operate in Gaza. They said the force’s mandate and powers must be clear and geared toward quick recovery and rebuilding. The ministers warned that any security arrangement should make it easier for the people of Gaza to re‑build after years of fighting.
During the conversation, the pair highlighted the West Bank situation, stressing that settlement activity and any further violations would only heighten tensions and derail peace. “We reject all settlement expansion and the repeated violations that undermine any prospect of a lasting cease‑fire,” both said.
The cease‑fire that ended two years of conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza began on 10 October. Egypt, Qatar, Turkey and the United States brokered the deal, which brought an end to daily hostilities across the region.
President Trump’s plan still calls for a temporary, internationally‑led stabilization force that would gradually take over security in Gaza from the Israeli army. Washington has reportedly been talking with Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Indonesia, Turkey and Azerbaijan about forming that force.
The dialogue between Egypt and Qatar shows that the two allies are picking up where Doha’s diplomatic mission left off, aiming to keep the fragile quiet in Gaza safe and to set the stage for a broader peace that brings together the West Bank and Gaza under a single Palestinian leadership. The two leaders make it clear that they will keep working toward that goal – a crucial step for any lasting solution to the Israel‑Hamas conflict.
