This Saturday, Egypt opened the Grand Egyptian Museum, a $1 billion landmark that will soon draw millions of visitors to the Giza Plateau. Located just outside Cairo, the new museum sits beside the world‑famous pyramids and the Sphinx, making it the largest museum devoted to a single civilization.

Inside, more than 50,000 artifacts tell the story of life in ancient Egypt—from prehistoric tools to Roman‑era relics. The building’s triangular glass façade echoes the pyramids, and a grand six‑story staircase from the atrium offers spectacular views of the nearby monuments.

A highlight is the 5,000‑piece collection from King Tutankhamun’s tomb, on display for the first time since the discovery by Howard Carter in 1922. The exhibit includes the boy pharaoh’s golden throne, funerary chariots, and the famous burial mask made of gold and precious stones. Egyptian archaeologist Zahi Hawass called the display “the masterpiece of the museum,” underlining why the opening sparked such excitement around the world.

The museum is part of President Abdel‑Fattah el‑Sissi’s megaprojects aimed at revitalizing Egypt’s struggling economy. Since taking office in 2014, he has invested heavily in infrastructure, hoping the renewed tourism will bring the foreign currency the country needs. Roads around Giza have been upgraded, a new metro station is under construction outside the museum, and the Sphinx International Airport opened just 40 minutes away.

The opening ceremony attracted leaders, monarchs, and heads of state, with the Egyptian presidency calling the event “an exceptional event in human culture and civilization.” 15.7 million tourists visited Egypt in 2024, contributing about 8 % of its GDP. The government now aims to double that figure to 30 million visitors a year by 2032.

The Grand Egyptian Museum will be open to the public starting Tuesday, ready to showcase Egypt’s rich heritage and welcome the world.
