Egypt’s top spy chief Hassan Mahmoud Rashad met in Cairo with Palestinian Vice‑President Hussein al‑Sheikh to talk about ending the Gaza crisis and keeping the ceasefire alive.
Both leaders, joined by Palestinian Intelligence Chief Majed Faraj, pledged to back the ceasefire agreement and reject Israel’s plan to annex any Palestinian land.
The talks come as Cairo hosts a meeting of Palestinian factions that aims to roll out the second phase of U.S. President Donald Trump’s peace plan. Egyptian officials say the country is ramping up conversations with Washington to stabilize Gaza and push for a lasting, fair peace.
Later this week, Rashad also met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel. The two discussed advancing Trump’s plan and the future of ties between Egypt and Israel, according to Netanyahu’s office.
The ceasefire that entered into force on Oct. 10—after two years of fighting—was brokered by the United States, Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey. U.S. diplomatic activity has surged, with special envoys Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner and Vice‑President J.D. Vance all visiting to plan the next phase. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also traveled to Israel for the same purpose.
Since the Hamas attack on Oct. 7, Gaza’s health authorities report that 68,280 Palestinians have been killed and 170,375 wounded. Even after the October 10 ceasefire, at least 89 people have died and 317 have been injured in Gaza since Oct. 11.
Egypt’s meetings highlight its effort to end the crisis, reinforce the ceasefire, and oppose any single‑country takeover of occupied Palestinian territory. The country is also preparing an international conference on Gaza reconstruction in November, aimed at rebuilding the strip and advancing the peace process.
