British lawmakers are raising the alarm over the escalating crisis in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), where protests have shut down the region since September 29.
A group of UK parliamentarians from the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Kashmir, led by Imran Hussain MP, sent a urgent letter to Hamish Falconer MP. They pointed to a total communications blackout that’s left people in PoJK isolated from the world.
Residents can’t make mobile calls, access the internet, or even use landlines. This cutoff is heightening fears among families, as locals worry about their safety amid the turmoil.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Imran Hussain shared that heavy police and paramilitary forces have flooded the area. The MPs say this buildup is making a bad situation even worse and sparking serious questions about civilian safety.
These moves, including the communication shutdown and crackdowns on protests, are fueling major human rights concerns in PoJK, the lawmakers warned.
The group is calling on the UK government to step in diplomatically. They want the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) to push Pakistan directly in Islamabad to end the restrictions.
Specifically, the MPs demand quick restoration of phone and internet services, steps to calm tensions, and real talks with all sides for a peaceful solution.
Many people in the UK with family ties to PoJK are feeling the pain too. They’re anxious, unable to contact loved ones, and upset by reports of violent responses to the demonstrations.
By spotlighting this to the UK government, the parliamentarians aim to keep global eyes on what they call a pressing human rights emergency under Pakistan’s control.
This push comes as international criticism of Pakistan’s approach to dissent in PoJK grows louder. While Pakistan holds firm, voices from abroad—like these British MPs—are demanding more transparency, accountability, and humanitarian aid in this volatile, disputed area.
