Shabir Choudhry, a prominent political activist and writer from Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), is sounding the alarm on rising tensions in the region. From London, he recently shared a strong message in a YouTube video, urging people to choose peaceful resistance over violence to avoid a crackdown by Pakistani forces.
Choudhry didn’t hold back in criticizing fiery speeches, like the one from Sardar Aman linked to the JKLF and recent Poonch protests. He slammed the harsh words used and called on the Action Committee and other groups to step up responsibly. “Even in tough times, Islamic principles ban attacks on civilians and non-fighters,” he said, stressing the importance of protecting human rights and steering clear of needless violence.
He pointed out a big double standard: While Pakistan faces flak for human rights abuses in PoJK, the Chinese occupation there gets little scrutiny. But his main warning targets Pakistan’s establishment, intelligence agencies, and military. “They’re experts at using force to crush dissent and have a long history of it,” Choudhry noted. “They know warfare but struggle against non-violent protests.” He fears they’re just waiting for an excuse to hit back hard.
Drawing lessons from past armed struggles in PoJK that cost countless lives, Choudhry begged activists not to repeat those errors. He also revealed recent arrests of two men, Kamran Qadir and Umar Saleem, and warned that the window from September 15 to October 15 could spark major unrest across South Asia.
Choudhry shut down rumors of wild protests, like storming or torching the legislative assembly. “That would only hurt our cause,” he said. He reminded everyone that PoJK isn’t part of Pakistan’s federal system, so locals must unite peacefully to protect their own interests.
Finally, he cautioned against troublemakers based abroad who stir chaos for their own gain. “Don’t let emotions take over—don’t hand the authorities an easy win,” Choudhry urged. His call for calm strategy aims to keep the focus on real change without the bloodshed.
