A French driver slammed his car into a crowd of pedestrians and cyclists early Wednesday morning on the island of Île d’Oléron, injuring 10 people, four of them critically wounded.
The attack happened just before 9 a.m. in the villages of Dolus‑d’Oléron and Saint‑Pierre‑d’Oléron. Police say the driver, a French nationalist in his thirties who has a record of petty offenses, deliberately chose his target.
When the authorities reached the scene, the driver tried to set his car on fire. Police quickly intervened and arrested him near the wreck. During the arrest, the driver shouted “Allahu Akbar,” a moment captured by the local prosecutor’s office.
Local hospitals, including the University Hospital of Poitiers, received five of the injured by airlift. Victims ranged in age from 22 to 67, and two remain in critical condition.
Mayor Thibault Brechkoff posted on Facebook that the incidents were “caused by someone deliberately causing these accidents.” He urged everyone to stay alert while investigators examine the driver’s motives, looking into possible mental health issues, drug or alcohol use, and whether he was on an extremist path.
The incident, which shocked the quiet island community, has sparked a broader conversation about public safety, road rage, and extremist threats in France.
