Paris – France’s newly re‑appointed Prime Minister, 39‑year‑old Sebastien Lecornu, addressed the nation on Saturday, urging a government that won’t be caught in “party jockeying.” He made the speech while visiting a police station just south of Paris, his first public outing since taking the post back after a brief resignation.
Macron’s decision to re‑appoint Lecornu last night was swift, especially after the former leader’s government fell after only 14 hours. Critics say the move was a “bad joke” and destabilised an already fragile political scene.
Lecornu said he will form a cabinet that must deliver France’s 2026 draft budget by Monday, a key step for ending months of paralysis and tackling the country’s mounting debt. He promised “I will do my duty and will not be a problem,” and insisted his team must stay out of partisan battles.
The political fallout is already visible. Far‑right National Rally star Jordan Bardella slammed the appointment and announced a motion to bring down the government. Les Républicains, led by former interior minister Bruno Retailleau, will not join the new cabinet but may support it from the sidelines. The Socialists are also pulling back, warning that they may dismiss the government unless Lecornu revokes the 2023 pension reform that raised the retirement age from 62 to 64.
France has been stuck in a political deadlock since Macron’s gamble on snap elections last year, which produced a hung parliament and more seats for the far right. EU leaders press France to cut deficits and debt. The cost‑cutting fight has toppled two of Lecornu’s predecessors.
Now, with Parliament needing 70 days to review the budget before the year ends, Lecornu says restoring public finances is top priority. Macron, meanwhile, has yet to speak to the public since the collapse of his first government last week. The nation watches closely as France braces for another decade‑running budget crisis.
