Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni highlighted India’s key role in tackling global conflicts during a chat with reporters at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. “I think it can play a very important role,” she told on the sidelines of the session, when asked about India’s part in ending ongoing wars like the one in Ukraine.
This comes after Meloni and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a phone call earlier this month. They discussed major regional and global issues, stressing the urgent need for a peaceful end to the Ukraine conflict. Modi reaffirmed India’s strong backing for diplomatic efforts to resolve it.
The leaders took stock of their growing India-Italy strategic partnership, covering areas like investments, defense, security, space exploration, science and technology, education, cultural exchanges, and fighting terrorism. Both committed to strengthening ties even further, following their Joint Strategic Action Plan for 2025-2029.
Meloni voiced Italy’s firm support for wrapping up a fair India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) as soon as possible. She also cheered on India’s plans to host the AI Impact Summit in 2026. On connectivity, they agreed to push forward the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEEC) project to boost trade and links between regions.
The two promised to keep talking regularly. Just last week, on September 17, Meloni sent warm birthday wishes to Modi for his 75th. In a post on X, she wrote: “Happy 75th birthday to the Indian Prime Minister @narendramodi. His strength, his determination, and his ability to lead millions of people are a source of inspiration. With friendship and esteem, I wish him health and energy to continue leading India toward a bright future and to further strengthen the relations between our Nations.”
Meanwhile, India and the European Union continue their dedicated push for a balanced FTA that will help businesses and everyday consumers on both sides thrive.
