In Belgrade, Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Djuric welcomed his Israeli counterpart, Gideon Saar, for a key meeting on Tuesday. The two discussed strengthening ties between Serbia and Israel at a pivotal time, as outlined in a statement from Israel’s Foreign Ministry.
Djuric expressed deep gratitude to Saar for his role in boosting relations between the two nations. He highlighted their deep-rooted history, spanning centuries of friendship between the Serbian and Jewish peoples. “We’re connected by shared hardships, values, and a strong belief in the future,” Djuric said. Serbia considers Israel a top friend and strategic partner, and the ministers focused on expanding bilateral economic and political cooperation.
A major topic was launching a strategic dialogue to enhance economic ties. This includes interagency collaboration and forming a joint economic committee. Djuric pointed out Israel’s dynamic and innovative economy, calling it one of the world’s best. He also boasted about Serbia’s rapid growth, noting how the country doubled its GDP in just over a decade, making it the fastest-rising economy in the region.
The leaders also bonded over their commitment to historical issues, like Holocaust remembrance, protecting Jewish cultural heritage, and fighting historical revisionism. “Serbia has always prioritized this and will keep doing so,” Djuric emphasized. Both nations aim to stand firm against efforts to rewrite history.
Djuric briefed Saar on the tough situation facing Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija. He tied the talks to recent global events, mentioning a significant meeting hours earlier between U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Serbia fully backs Trump’s peace initiative in the Middle East and urges Hamas to release all hostages immediately. Djuric specifically called out the ordeal of Serbian-Israeli citizen Alon Ohel, held captive for more than 800 days in harsh conditions. “There’s no excuse for delaying their freedom,” he said.
Wrapping up, Djuric thanked the Israeli delegation for their ongoing friendship and cooperation. He envisioned a bright future of shared successes that honor both nations’ historical sacrifices and secure hope for coming generations. “Feel at home in Belgrade and Serbia—we’re eager to build even stronger relations,” he added.
Saar responded with thanks to Djuric, the Serbian government, and President Aleksandar Vucic for their genuine support. He reflected on decades of partnerships across various fields and praised Serbia’s efforts to preserve its Jewish community and Holocaust memory. “Serbia stands as a vital ally for Israel in the Western Balkans, and deepening our friendship is a top priority,” Saar stated.
To seal the visit, the ministers signed several agreements. These include a Memorandum of Understanding for bilateral consultations and diplomatic training between their foreign ministries. They also inked a Cooperation Program for 2025-2028 covering education, science, culture, youth, and sports. Djuric additionally signed a Declaration on Survivors, underscoring their shared values.
