British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has strongly condemned a shocking terror attack on a Manchester synagogue, vowing to protect every Jewish person in the UK from rising anti-Semitism.
In a post on X, Starmer called the incident a “vile terrorist attack” targeting Jews simply for being Jewish. “Anti-Semitism is a hatred that is rising, once again. Britain must defeat it, once again,” he wrote. “To every Jewish person in this country: I promise that I will do everything in my power to guarantee you the security you deserve.”
The attack unfolded in Manchester’s Crumpsall neighborhood on Thursday, a day that coincided with Yom Kippur—the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. A car plowed into a group of people outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue, and a man was stabbed nearby. At least two people died, while three others fight for their lives in serious condition.
Police say armed officers shot the suspect, who they believe is now dead. Worshippers inside the synagogue were quickly evacuated as emergency teams rushed to the scene. Greater Manchester Police activated PLATO, a national alert for deploying armed units during an active threat.
Starmer promised to boost security right away, with extra police officers heading to synagogues across the UK. “The fact that this has taken place on Yom Kippur makes it all the more horrific,” he added on X. “My thoughts are with the loved ones of all those affected.”
In response, the prime minister is cutting short his trip to Copenhagen, where he was at a European leaders’ security meeting. He’ll head back to chair an emergency Cobra session—a key government group that tackles national crises.
