Lithuania prepares to evacuate thousands if Ukraine war spills over

Hundreds of people joined a large‑scale evacuation drill in Vilnius, Lithuania’s capital, on Monday. The test was part of the country’s effort to stay ready for any sudden regional tensions.
About 100 residents were moved by train to a sports arena 100 kilometres (62 miles) away, where they slept on temporary camp beds. The arena, which is typically used for sporting events, served as a makeshift emergency shelter during the exercise.
Lithuanian officials said the operation tested key logistics, such as transporting civilians quickly and setting up safe sleeping areas in a short time frame. The drill also aimed to check communication between local authorities and emergency services, ensuring that if a real crisis hit, residents would receive clear instructions and help fast.
“Eliza Herbert from France24 reports that the evacuation exercise was a realistic simulation,” said the spokesperson. “We’re preparing for possible regional instability, and these drills help us identify what works and what needs improvement.”
The use of a train to move people underscores Lithuania’s commitment to fast, efficient evacuations, and the choice of a sporting arena shows how public venues can help shelter people when crises arise. Residents praised the drill as a demonstration of the country’s resilience and readiness.
