Louvre heist suspect’s trial in a separate case postponed due to enormous media attention

A French court in Bobigny, just north of Paris, pushed the trial of a suspect in the Louvre jewel heist to April. The delay was triggered by heavy media coverage that the judge said could jeopardize a fair trial and damage the suspect’s right to a presumption of innocence.

The 39‑year‑old, named Abdoulaye N., was arrested at his home in Aubervilliers six days after the October 19 robbery that saw thieves steal more than $102 million worth of Crown Jewels from the Louvre. Investigators are building a case that he, along with three other suspects, broke into the Apollo Gallery and cut into display cases with power tools. DNA evidence found on a case and on stolen items links the suspect to the crime.

At the original court date Wednesday, the suspect’s lawyers argued that the sensational coverage of the Louvre robbery made it impossible for them to prepare properly. Lawyer Maxime Cavaillé warned the court that the presumption of innocence must be upheld and that the private lives of defendants should remain protected, even in such an extraordinary case.

The prosecutor, Laure Beccuau, agreed that the proceedings must take place in “serene conditions.” She noted that the suspect had given only minimal statements and had partially admitted his involvement, but that he had been cleared of a related 2015 theft case.

Abdoulaye N. is also accused of vandalizing a prison cell in 2019, but that charge is separate from the Louvre case. Two other people linked to the robbery have been taken into custody as part of the investigation, though authorities have kept their identities confidential.

The court’s decision to postpone the trial reflects the tension between a free press and the right to a fair trial. By moving the hearing to April, the Bobigny court hopes to give the defense enough time to review evidence and prepare while minimizing media influence.

As the case progresses, observers will watch whether the delays help guarantee a trial that satisfies both justice and public interest.
