London, UK – A man who carried out a deadly attack outside a Manchester synagogue was found to have pledged his allegiance to ISIS, police confirmed.
During the early stages of the shooting, the suspect called the police and declared he was acting for the Islamic State. The attack happened outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue on Thursday, the day of Yom Kippur, the holiest day in Judaism.
The police later identified the attacker as Jihad Al‑Shamie, a 35‑year‑old British citizen of Syrian descent. Firearms officers shot him dead at the scene.
Two men were killed in the assault. Greater Manchester Police named the victims Adrian Daulby, 53, and Melvin Cravitz, 66. Both men were from the Crumpsall suburb where the violence broke out.
A police spokesperson said one of the men who was shot was likely inside the synagogue, trying to stop the attacker. The only shots fired came from authorized firearms officers who were trying to protect the building and its occupants. The officers said the shooting happened as part of a necessary operation to stop further harm.
Al‑Shamie had recently been arrested on suspicion of rape, released on bail while investigations continued. Police say he may have been influenced by extreme Islamist ideology. The specific details of the alleged rape case are still unclear.
