In Brussels, Belgium, the United Kashmir People National Party (UKPNP) has slammed the Pakistani government and the Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) administration for sending in a huge police force to crush a peaceful protest planned for later this month. The party sees this as a clear attack on basic rights and a throwback to dark times.
Sajid Hussain, the UKPNP’s Secretary of Information and a key member of its Central Committee, shared these concerns in a press release on X (formerly Twitter). The upcoming demonstration on September 29 marks Jammu and Kashmir Invasion Day. It honors the memory of October 22, 1947, when tribal militias supported by Pakistan invaded the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir. According to the UKPNP, this attack broke the Treaty of Amritsar from 1846 and the Standstill Agreement of 1947. It led to widespread violence, forced marriages, looting, and massive displacement of people.
Hussain pointed out that deploying security forces in PoJK today feels just like the coercive methods from that 1947 invasion. “This move shows how scared the government is of protests demanding justice, human rights, democracy, and equality,” he said. Instead of fixing the real issues faced by locals, the authorities are relying on force and threats.
“Protesters aren’t criminals—they’re simply using their right to peaceful assembly,” the statement emphasized. “It’s wrong to send thousands of police to shut them down.”
The UKPNP has called on the PoJK government and Pakistan’s central leaders to pull back the police right away and honor the right to protest. The party also urged the United Nations, European Union, and global human rights groups to step in and call out this abuse of power in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
The September 29 event will spotlight ongoing problems in PoJK, like the exploitation of natural resources, missing democratic freedoms, and curbs on political voices. As tensions rise in the region, many are watching closely for signs of real change.
