In Stockholm, a double‑decker city bus crashed into a bus stop on Valhallavägen in the Östermalm district, killing five people and leaving two others seriously injured. The incident happened at about 3:23 p.m. on Friday, according to police reports.

The bus, which was not in service and had no passengers on board, struck the shelter on the right side of the road. The front of the vehicle was heavily damaged, and emergency crews rushed to the scene almost immediately.

Police treated the crash as “involuntary manslaughter” and are still investigating the cause. They detained the driver and will question him to find out what happened. The exact reason for the collision — whether it was a mechanical failure, a medical emergency, or driver error — has not yet been announced.

A spokesperson for the Stockholm region, Michelle Marcher, told reporters that the victims ranged in age and gender, but that five people were confirmed dead. Two of the injured passengers were transported to hospital in serious condition. The area is close to the Royal Institute of Technology, a major university in the northern part of the city.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson posted on X (formerly Twitter) that he had received the tragic news and expressed his thoughts for those affected. He said that “we do not yet know the cause of this, but right now my thoughts are primarily with those who have been affected and their families.”

The incident has shocked residents who, according to eyewitnesses, were just heading home or running errands when the bus hit the shelter.

This is a developing story. Updates on the investigation and any official statements from authorities will be posted as new details emerge.
