A powerful blast ripped through two stories of an apartment building on Bucharest’s Calea Rahovei, killing three residents and sending at least 13 people to hospitals for treatment.
The explosion hit the fifth and sixth floors of the eight‑story block in the city’s Sector 5. Upon arrival, emergency crews—eleven fire engines and four mobile intensive‑care units—quickly assessed the damage. Firefighters worked around the clock to pull out trapped residents and to control the situation.
Authorities say the cause is still under investigation, but they have shut off the gas supply in the area as a safety precaution. The Ministry of Health reported that survivors suffered polytrauma and burns. One victim was later found dead beneath a concrete slab on the sixth floor, according to police statements.
All residents were evacuated, and rescue teams searched for anyone who might still be inside. Nearby schools also evacuated students and teachers just in case the blast had affected the block’s neighbors.
Video footage released by the Emergency Situations Inspectorate shows the façade of the corner apartments smashed, windows blown out in adjacent units, and rubble scattered across the street below. The blast also damaged a neighboring building, with detached construction elements flinging from its façade.
Local hospitals are treating the injured, while investigators work to determine the exact trigger of the explosion. The incident has sparked renewed calls for tighter building safety checks across Bucharest.
